This presentation discusses the challenges associated with flexible operation of conventional and combined cycle fossil power plants. It outlines the different effects of solar photovoltaic and wind generation on electricity grids and the dispatch of fossil power plants. Some examples of implications for the safe, reliable, affordable and environmentally responsible generation of electricity from these plants are provided. The paper concludes with a discussion of efforts to manage the challenges introduced by flexible operation of fossil power plants.
