Evaluating Fire Risk Impact to Utility ROW
Wade Ward, CWMS, Fire Mitigation Specialist, Arizona Public Service
We cannot make significant strides in reducing catastrophic wildland fire risk in utility Rights-of-Way unless we understand the risk. The approach to mitigating risk at APS is a combination of elements, but understanding the risk and developing a model to prioritize resources is the foundation. APS Wildfire Risk Index Assessment Analysis was developed to create a risk-informed decision framework to identify overall risk and determine potential mitigation plans and programs to address the wildfire threat to APS transmission and distribution system statewide.
This presentation would include discussion on the development of fire risk models for the use of utilities and how to track risk based on vegetation and fire history. I will present the tools that APS has developed to identify risk. Presentation will cover how APS prepares employees to handle fire risk and mitigation of wildland fire safely while working in the field.
